Bible Verses for Peace: 10 Scriptures on Stillness and Rest
The Hebrew word shalom means far more than 'peace' — it means wholeness, completeness, nothing missing, nothing broken. Scripture's vision of peace is not passive but active, not empty but full. These verses help recalibrate the heart toward that fullness.
You Will Keep in Perfect Peace
The condition here is trust — a mind 'stayed' on God. The word 'stayed' means fixed, leaning on, resting against. Peace isn't found by looking away from problems but by fixing attention on something more solid than they are.
Isaiah 26:3
"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."
Peace I Leave With You
Jesus speaks these words at the Last Supper, knowing what is coming. The peace he offers is not circumstantial — it's a gift that the world cannot give and cannot take. That distinction matters enormously.
John 14:27
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
He Makes Me Lie Down in Green Pastures
Psalm 23 is one of the most memorized passages in Scripture for good reason. Notice that peace here is active — the Shepherd makes the psalmist lie down. Sometimes rest is something we must be led into.
Psalm 23:2–3
"He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul."
Be Still and Know
This verse is often quoted as a comfort, but its original context is a battle scene. 'Be still' is better translated 'cease striving' — stop fighting for control and recognize who God is. Peace comes after the striving stops.
Psalm 46:10
"Be still, and know that I am God."
The Fruit of Righteousness Is Peace
Isaiah's vision is agricultural — peace grows from righteousness, and its harvest is quietness and confidence. That progression is worth sitting with: righteousness → peace → quiet confidence.
Isaiah 32:17
"The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever."
