Bible Verses for Anxiety: 10 Scriptures for Peace and Calm
Anxiety is one of the most common human experiences, and it's also one Scripture addresses with striking directness. These verses aren't platitudes — they are anchors. Below are ten passages that speak into fear, worry, and the restless mind, along with brief reflections on how to sit with each one.
Cast Your Cares on Him
Peter's instruction is deceptively simple. The Greek word for 'casting' is the same used for throwing a cloak onto a donkey — a deliberate, physical act of transfer. Anxiety isn't ignored; it's handed off.
1 Peter 5:7
"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
Do Not Be Anxious About Anything
Philippians 4:6–7 is not a command to stop feeling anxious — it's an instruction on what to do when anxiety comes. Bring it to prayer. The peace that follows 'surpasses understanding', meaning it doesn't require circumstances to change first.
Philippians 4:6–7
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
God Has Not Given You a Spirit of Fear
Fear and anxiety often feel like facts. Paul reminds Timothy — and us — that they are not our inheritance. Power, love, and a sound mind are the gifts. This verse is worth returning to daily.
2 Timothy 1:7
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
He Gives Rest to the Weary
Jesus doesn't promise a life without burdens. He promises to carry them with you. The image of a yoke shared between two is intimate — you are not pulling alone.
Matthew 11:28–29
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
The Lord Is Near
One sentence in Philippians 4 is easy to overlook: 'The Lord is near.' This isn't just theological comfort — it's the ground on which the command not to be anxious stands.
Philippians 4:5
"Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near."
