Biblical hope (Greek: elpis) means confident expectation, not uncertain wishing. Romans 15:13 calls God 'the God of hope' who fills believers with joy and peace. Jeremiah 29:11 grounds hope in God's specific, intentional plans for each person's future.
Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most beloved: 'For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.' Romans 8:24–25 and Isaiah 40:31 are also foundational.
Psalm 62:5 says 'My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.' Biblical hope flows from God's character — his faithfulness, his power, and his promises recorded in Scripture.
Romans 5:3–4 turns the logic around: 'tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.' Difficulty is itself a pathway to a deeper, tested hope — not despite hardship but through it.
